The most important skill that no one teaches you!

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The human body is a very efficient construct. It always tries to optimize the levels of energy we expend and adapt. It always adapts to the environment and stresses we put it in. When we look at the human mind it should not surprise us that we find similar mechanisms. According to several studies, more than 40 percent of the actions we perform each day are automated or what we call habits.

Habits are extremely powerful as they follow neurological pathways that once they are there are difficult to override with conscious willpower.

How else can we explain that despite better judgment and knowledge people around the globe perform acts that they know are bad for them and against their goals but still do them?

Let me give you some examples:

  • A person wants to lose weight, but still eats crap on a daily basis
  • A student wants to have better grades at school, but instead of studying the time is spent playing with the phone

Habits are not bad, I would say quite the opposite. However, as habits are so powerful it is extremely important that we are aware of our habits and know how to influence them!

If you are like me, then no one ever taught you how to watch out for your habits and how to form good habits that will lead to a good life with the results you would like to see.

Look closely at any successful person on the planet and you will find that what makes the difference is that they have strong, good habits that made their success possible. (There is no such thing as overnight success!)

In the end “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” (Will Durant)

The most important skill you should work on is learning how to change and form habits. This will allow you to shape your life in the direction you want!
